162 GENERAL GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI
May 7 th - With an order of the day dated from the Piemonte, the follow-
ing disposition was given to the expeditionary corps, who at first received
again the name of Hunters of the Alps, in memory of the feats made by many
of the volunteers who had belonged to that brigade in 1859:
Chief of Staff: Sirtori;
Secretary of the General: Basso;
Staff: Crispi, Manin, Calvino, Majocchi, Griziotti, Borchetta, Bruzzesi;
Aides de camp: Türr, Cenni, Montanari, Bandi, Stagnetti;
7 companies: Bixio, Orsini, Stocco, La Masa, Anfossi, Carini, Cairoli;
Genoese Carabinieri: Mosto;
Intendancy: Acerbi, Bovi, De Maestri, Rodi;
Doctors: Ripari, Boldrini, Giulini.
At 7am the expedition arrived in Talamone.
Garibaldi, wearing the uniform of a Sardinian general, went to the com-
mander of the fort and asked for weapons and ammunitions. He could find
only a few old rifles and a culverin of the 17 th century, but having been
informed that in Orbetello there were well stocked depots, he sent Turr there,
who persuaded the commander, Lieutenant Colonel Giorgini, that the
request was legitimate, and obtained rifles, cartridges, barrels of powder, 3
pieces and 1200 charges. Upon request of the municipality, large supplies of
food were also provided.
May 8 th - Colonel Zambianchi remained ashore with 64 men, with the
task of «invading the Papal territory, opening hostilities against the foreign
mercenary troops and stirring up a revolt in the Papal State and in the State
of the King of Naples». Perhaps the purpose of this expedition was to make
the Bourbons uncertain about Garibaldi’s real plan. Andrea Sgarallino and
a handful of Leghorn people had to reach them via sea at a point of the
Maremma coastland.
The organisation of the expeditionary corps was modified. An 8 th compa-
ny (Bassini) was formed with the men arrived from Maremma and the com-
mand of the 2nd company was given to Dezza; Orsini received the command
of the artillery, and a so-called engineers corps was established with about
twenty workers, led by Minutilli. Navigation was resumed. In Porto Santo
Stefano, coal, water and supplies were loaded; weapons and cartridges (about
20 per person) were distributed and they set out again in the afternoon.
