issues concerning this matter. All the Officers that felt at ease both in a bar-
rack and in a library and archive, and one must add, with no detriment to
their career, if Francesco Saverio Grazioli had the rank of Deputy Chief of
Staff of the Army and Pietro Maravigna reached the rank of Designated Fleet
Commander. And even though the rest of the authors failed to reach the
highest ranks of military hierarchy, they were nevertheless interesting person-
alities such as Pompilio Schiarini who went from simple Bersagliere to
Brigadier General or Luigi Cicconetti, lieutenant general, nominated Senator
of the Kingdom and Amedeo Tosti who after spending ten years in the
Historical Office, went over to civilian ranks concluding his career as Head
of the Office for Literary, Artistic and Scientific copyright at the State
Secretary for Relations with the Prime Minister’s Office.
Obviously, after seventy-five years, their literary style may appear “dated”,
but the content of their writings is still completely valid, at least with regard
to operations, proving to be an indispensable basis for further in depth stud-
            ies.
This is the basis that we now intend to make available for scholars and
            lovers of History.
