10 from Italy to the Canary Islands
Lanzarote, specifically in the fields of art and music, paving a long path of
important cultural initiatives that have been increasingly appreciated by the
insular institutions and the communications media, which have understood
and attested to their undeniable usefulness.
This esteem, earned on the field with the local Institutions and the
community residing on the Island, enabled the aforesaid Association
to found a Comité Cientifico Institucional Insular (Institutional Insular
Scientific Committee), with the aim of performing more in-depth research on
Malocello and into his arrival on Lanzarote and in order to commemorate
the event by marking the passing of seven hundred years.
The awareness that a people cannot look to the future without consciously
remembering their own past and, therefore, the strong belief that we should
make the most of this date in order to give this historic event the celebration it
deserves, in turn led to the founding, in Italy, too, of the Comitato Promotore
per le celebrazioni del VII centenario della scoperta di Lanzarote e delle Isole
Canarie da parte del navigatore italiano Lanzarotto Malocello (1312-2012)
- (Promotion Committee for the 7 centenary celebrations of the discovery
th
of Lanzarote and the Canary Islands by Italian sailor Lanzarotto Malocello,
1312-2012). I profoundly hope that this organisation can become the soul,
the instrument, the present-day vehicle of communication for Malocello and
his historic discovery.
With regard to this work-compendium, I would like warmly to thank
Marco Valerio Santonocito, lawyer and history lover, for his precious advice
and research activity; Fernando Acitelli, journalist, writer and poet; my
wife Sabrina Di Sepio, lay judge, lover of history, philosophy and literature,
and Gerlando Rizzo, retired general manager, journalist and writer.
I would also like to thank all those scholars and illustrious professors
who wished to express and set forth their own respected opinions in this
book, thus increasing the depth and prestige of this work.
Mr Alfonso Licata
Chair of the “Comitato Promotore per le celebrazioni del VII centenario della
scoperta di Lanzarote e delle Isole Canarie da parte del navigatore italiano
Lanzarotto Malocello (1312-2012)”
