ro e dei suoi continuatori” [Genoese Annals of Caffaro and his successors]
compiled by the annalist Jacopo Doria, uncle to that very same Tedisio
Doria who had paid for the Vivaldi brothers’ expedition and sailed away
with them, the text of which is provided below literally.
“Thus, in that same year, Tedisio Doria, Ugolino Vivaldi and his broth-
er, with a few Genoese, sailed for a voyage that no man had ever attempted
before. They equipped two galleys with great care, stocked them with water
and food supplies and other necessary things and headed off in the month
of May for the Strait of Ceuta intending to cross the Ocean toward the
Indies, and from there to bring back useful goods. Two Friars Minor were
also embarked, which thing appeared to be worthy of admiration both to
those who saw it and those who only heard about it. And after they sailed
past the place called Gozora, we had no more certain news of them. May
the Lord watch over them and bring them back home safely” Not many
