At 13:30, the bombardment had been intensified and all the redoubts in the central
group had been taken under severe fire. The shells falling on Kilitbahir and Channakkale
were causing fires.
In the Rumelia Mecidiye Redoubt, cannons were left out of battle since almost all
the soldiers of two artillery squads had been martyred or injured because of the shells
hitting the embrasures.
At 14:00 o’clock Bouvet, taken under fire by the Anatolian Hamidiye Redoubt, began
to lean over one side with a slight smoke and sank with 603 seamen after three minutes.
The Anatolian Hamidiye Redoubt directed its fire on Agamemnon first and Irresist-
ible at 15:20. Irresistible, which leaned in the direction of the quay at 16:30 was taken
under vigorous fire by the howitzer region. The ship, which went adrift in the direction
of first Karanlık Harbour and then Dardanos Battery, sank at 19:30. Ocean which had
been com ing near Irresistible was also hit. It was drifted to Morto Gulf by the currents
and sank at 22:30. Inflexible, Suffren and Gaulois warships were also seriously dam-
aged.
Seeing that the three ships had sunk and that the other three had been seriously dam-
aged, the United Fleet Commander signaled his ships to draw back to Tenedos.
Despite their technical deficiency, Turkish artillery has ful filled its task with enor-
mous courage and calm against the United Fleet. At a moment when the Dardanos Bat-
tery had held fire to make up for the damage it suffered because of the active fire of the
United Fleet, Hasan, the Battery Commander, First Lieutenant Mevsuf, Squad Com-
mander Lieutenant a can didate for the supplementary officer and three soldiers were
martyred with a shell that had fallen on the bandage place. The battery, which was made
ready to shoot again within a short time, started fire on Irresistible. The name of the
battery was later changed as “Hasan-Mevsuf Battery” by the proposal of Channakkale
fortified Place Commandership and the approval of the Supreme Military Command
referring to the names of the martyred officers.
At last, naval operation ended with a severe defeat in which United Fleet lost one-
third of its fighting force. And decisive victory was quite obvious that the Dardanelles
could not be passed through with only the navy and without the land forces.
6. Mainstreams of turkish joint operation plan against amphibious operation in
dardanelles peninsula
Upon this complex dilemma and aborted attempt, the Allied High Command decided
to use the army as the main dominant element in this campaign. The first amphibious
operation was thought and applied in this war in the Dardanelles peninsula. Allied am-
phibious experience at Gallipoli planned and carried out in the face of the powerful,
armed, obstacle and manned defenses systems.
