The cultural penetration of the Europeans was also made possible by
the fact that the daughter of the king Luis Guadarfia, named Teguise, mar-
ried Maciot, the grandson of the knight Jean de Béthencourt, after his uncle
returned to France in his native town of Grainville-La-Teinturiere (now-
adays in the department of Seine-Maritime in Normandy). However, this
must be considered a marriage of convenience because, according to the
aboriginal culture of Lanzarote, power was transmitted through the female
line, as evidenced by the fact that the name of the princess gave birth to the
               homonymous city.
