Canarios tiene la figura de Lanzarotto Malocello.
Situado a escasos Kilómetros del Continente Africano, el
archipiélago Canario es hoy día una avanzadilla de Europa hacia África y
América, su situación privilegiada y su clima convierten a Canarias en una
zona comercial y turística de primer orden.
Si bien hay referencias de la existencia de Canarias desde la más remota
antigüedad, su incorporación a la historia de Europa se produce con la
llegada de Malocello a la isla de Lanzarote en 1.312. Así pues a Lanzarotto
Malocello corresponde el honor de su redescubrimiento, por ello, a punto de
cumplirse los 700 años de su arribada, parece muy oportuno que celebremos
la efeméride con la brillantez que la ocasión merece.
Nuestra población se siente orgullosa de ser síntesis de la Europa
actual, pues la presencia en nuestro territorio de Genoveses, Mallorquines,
Normandos, Portugueses, Castellanos etc. han marcado nuestro carácter y
han hecho de nosotros un pueblo moderno, tolerante, y abierto al mundo.
Mucho ha tenido que ver en esto la figura de Malocello. Por ello reitero la
necesidad de que todos seamos capaces de celebrar en el 2.012 la llegada
de Malocello con todo el esplendor que su figura merece.

I think we need to emphasize the importance of Lanzarotto Malocello for
us Canarians.
Located a few kilometres from the African continent, the Canarian archi-
pelago is nowadays a spearhead of Europe toward Africa and America; its
prime location and climate make it a top notch commercial and tourist area.
Although there is evidence of the existence of the Canary Islands since
ancient times, their presence in Europe’s history begins with the arrival of
Malocello on the island of Lanzarote in 1312. To Lanzarotto Malocello goes
the honour of its rediscovery, and therefore, in the seventh centenary of his
arrival, it seems very appropriate to celebrate the event with the splendour
that the occasion deserves.
Our people are proud of being part of today’s Europe, since the presence
in our land of Genoese, Majorcans, Normans, Portuguese, Castilians, etc.
has marked our character and made of us a people that is modern, tolerant,
and open to the world. This had much to do with the figure of Malocello.
Therefore, I reiterate the need to be able to celebrate, in this year 2012, the
arrival of Malocello, with all the splendour that his figure deserves.
