F. Stick to the good traditions of our own and borrow beneficial experiences from for-
eign military
PLA launched a systematic study on and learning from Soviet Union’s military op-
erational theories in the first few years after establishment of PRC. After that, a large
amount of military theoretic works, special reports and articles published by Soviet Un-
ion, US, Japan, Britain, West Germany and France were translated into Chinese, new
ideas in the foreign military theories, information about the latest development in for-
eign military equipment and weaponry, as well as changes of operational thinking were
introduced to China. In the meantime, PLA also conducted a systemic research on our
own experiences and recapitulated rules of operations since 1927 when PLA’s predeces-
sor was created. It has been proved that it is an important way to know the opponent and
oneself by learning both from foreign military and from one’s own past and to keep the
theories and practice of combined operation updated with the world military develop-
ment.
