Liberation 1943-1945 and the related military cri-

1943- 1945 minal trials.
Inaugurated in Rome in September 2021 at
the Sacrario delle Bandiere (Shrine of the Flags
of the Armed Forces) in the Monument Vittoria-
no, the exhibition has toured many big cities sin-
ce April 2022, earning approval both for the pro-
duction (graphics, audiovisuals and multimedia)
and the ability to show the audience - especially
the youngsters - the high ethic values behind the
sacrifices of tens of thousands of military priso-
ners and civilians, cruelly slaughtered by Nazis
after September 8th 1943: the same sacrifice
that established our Republican State.
The writer is also the curator: the Military Pu-
blic Prosecutor, formerly Public Prosecutor in La
Spezia and Rome, who between 2002 and 2013
prepared more than 450 trials for crimes against
the Italian civilians and soldiers (committed in Italy
and abroad after September 8th 1943) and per-
formed 17 trials for the most serious massacres
on the subject. Among them we find Marzabot-
to-Monte Sole, Bologna, more than 800 victims;
Sant’Anna di Stazzema, Lucca, approximately
360 victims; San Terenzo and Vinca, Massa, more
than 350 victims; Civitella in Val di Chiana, Arez-
zo, approximately 200 victims; Vallucciole, Stia
and Monchio, on the tuscan-emilian Apennines,
360 victims; Padule di Fucecchio, Pistoia, ap-
proximately 184 victims and the massacre in Ke-
falonia (Greece), where thousands of Italian war
prisoners were slaughtered by the Germans.
It was the urge not to waste the huge amount
MARCO of documents and pictures gathered during the
investigations and the trials, as well as offering
DE PAOLIS the audience the possibility to see what I have
experienced in more than 20 years of proceedin-
gs on Nazifascist crimes during the War of Libe-
Military Public ration, that led me to create and realise this exhi-
Prosecutor bition: a useful space of knowledge and reflection
upon Italian modern history, an important period
for the birth of our Republic that is still not ful-
ly known nowadays. An attempt to add value to
the contributions of our Armed Forces and our
non-belligerent civilians.
Therefore, the purpose of this exhibition -
strongly supported in 2021 by the formerly Chief
of Defence Staff, General Enzo Vecciarelli and
