                  The volunteers are very much reduced in numbers, but eager; it could be
               said that the dross had been removed, only the best elements were left.
                  To those who saw him close, that morning Garibaldi seemed pensive and sad,
               and Valzania states that he was told not to give the order to sound the bugle.
                  The marching order can be seen in the graphic on page 321.
                  The vanguard had just gone past Mentana when it received news that the
               enemy was close and marching on the Nomentana road: it is about 12:30.
                  In the council of war that took place in Rome on the evening of the 12 th
               November it was decided to move immediately against the “insurgents of the
               Agro Romano” and cut short the revolutionary revolt with a decisive action.
                  General Kanzler will lead the expedition, which will be composed as follows:
