Station . The Idea was to have four personnel, id est a warrant officer (maresciallo
d’alloggio) and three carabinieri. As well all the costs was put in Foreign Ministry
expenses, like the special benefit for the duty in colony with the amount of 150 lire for
6
the NCO and 100 lire for the carabinieri .
On the same time, the ministry paid the travel costs from and to the colony and the
costs for equipment, guns and uniforms.
For the equipment and armament, it was underlined: “armament: lightest possible,
parade uniform (Grande uniforme) no other cloth dress, many shoes of which an average
dozen for each of summer combat uniforms”. For the nourishment the Navy Ministry
“could give the food by the Royal Ships located in Assab with the same portion given to
7
the sailors and with identical prices .
The Carabinieri General Headquarters asked to the other inferior level (Carabinieri
Legions) to communicate the name of the personnel with the following requirements:
volunteer, with a two year of engagement to be held in colony, chosen among the
Carabinieri Horse, “to be able to patrol on horse the territory” and at least one “should
be married”.
The Carabinieri Headquarters replied to the War ministry that there was no problem
to find three carabinieri but on the other hand it was “difficult to find a married
personnel because, in the Carabinieri only the warrant officers could be married
because of Carabinieri rules not permitted it to private, corporals (appuntati), sergeants
8
(vicebrigadieri) and staff sergeant (brigadieri)” . So the two stars general commander
Roissard de Bellet, proposed two not married warrant officers capable to accomplish the
mission of Carabinieri station commander. So the War ministry accepted the solution of
the Carabinieri Headquarters waiting for the names of the personnel. 9
The personnel was chosen according to the requirement. Specifically, the staff
10
sergeant promoted to the rank of warrant officer Enrico Cavedagni from Bologna , on
duty in Sicily, the carabinieri horse Albino Ghitta from Piedmont on duty in Campania,
Edoardo Piazzi on duty in Lazio, Pasquale Iervolino from Ottaviano (Naples) on duty
