Foreword
irst of all, I want to thank the Brazilian commission of military history that accepted
F my paper about the Carabinieri station of Assab.
The small post of police force in a village situated in the Horn of Africa represents
the first mission abroad of the Italian Carabinieri. The Corps was founded in the small
kingdom of Sardinia, after the Restoration and the fall of Napoleon on 13th July 1814.
The mission was to provide security and restore public order according to the Absolute
government led by the Savoy dynasty till King Carlo Alberto that promulgated the first
constitution (known as Statuto Albertino) on 4th March 1848.
During that period and till the unification of Italy under the crown of Savoy, with the
first king of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II, the Carabinieri Corps was on the battlefield in
Italy and abroad (from the siege of Grenoble in 1815 till the siege of Gaeta 1861). After
the unification of the Italian boot, the first mission was the fight against the Brigantaggio,
i.e. bands of brigands that tried to fight the new government first for political reason
