Prof. André WESSELS joined the Department of History at the University of the Free
State (UFS) in Bloemfontein, Republic of South Africa, in 1988, having earlier completed
an M.A. in History (cum laude) and a D.Phil. in History at the same University. At
present he is a Senior Professor in, and Chairperson of the Department of History at the
UFS, and is also a Visiting Fellow at the Australian Defence Force Academy, University
of New South Wales, in Canberra. He is the author, co-author or editor of twelve books
and smaller monographs, and has also authored or co-authored more than ninety articles
in academic journals, as well as many other articles and more than a hundred book
reviews. South African military history is his main field of research.
