let us not forget that in 1347-1348 the great epidemic of the “Black Death”
reduced by more than a third the population of Europe. Cities with more
than a hundred thousand inhabitants such as Milan and Florence were hit
hard, so much so that Florence would exceed one hundred thousand inhab-
itants again only in 1864, when it became the temporary capital of Italy
(see Garzanti, Storia [History], Vol. II, p. 133).
