In a certain way the history of the Russian and Soviet Fleet in the Mediterra-
nean coincide. The glorious period of active operarions of Russian squadrons in
the end of the XVIII and the beginning of the XIX century, representing the sea
power and military-political might of the Russian Empire and the following reces-
sion of the activity of the Russian Fleet up to 1917, was repeated in the history
of the Soviet Navy- creation in 1967 of the Mediterranean squadron seriously in-
fluencing on the military-political situation in the region and the following after
the desintegration of the Soviet Union dissappearence of our ships from the Medi-
terranean Sea.
So that is the sad end of the history of the Russian and Soviet sea power in
the Mediterranean up to this day. But we do not lose hope that the Russian Navy
will rise once again as it happened severa! times before.
