               cartography in 1339.
                  The first document, of 1330, in which Lanzarotto acted as a witness, can-
               not be found in the Genoese collection and therefore is to be considered lost.

                  The second document - the notarial act of 22  February 1384, kept in
               the Records of the State of Genoa, in which Lanzarotto Malocello’s name
               appears – contains a vital aspect. It proves that someone by the name of
               Lanzarotto Malocello existed (not as living and present at the time the
               deed itself was written, but instead as a deceased person), referred to in
               said deed as the husband of a woman belonging to an important Genoese
               family: the Fieschi family of Lavagna.
                  Below you can find the wording of the deed, translated from Latin.
               “Donna Ginevra, wife of the deceased officer Mr Pietro Malocello, a cit-
               izen of Genoa, guardian and curator and with the title of guardian and
               curator of Clara, her daughter and heir of half of said deceased Mr Piet-
               ro’s succession, the tutelage and guardianship of whom and the inventory
               (of possessions) conferred to her, are recorded in two public deeds, writ-

               ten by hand by me, the under mentioned notary, earlier this year on 11
               February, and also proxy, and with that title, of Giovanni Lomellini of the
               deceased Egidio for a sixth part (of the possessions) of the aforementioned
               deceased Mr Pietro, the cited power of attorney consisting in a public deed
               drawn up by hand by me, the under mentioned notary, earlier this year on

               14  April; and Ilario Lomellini guardian and curator and with that title, on
               behalf of Valentino and Gregorio, sons of the deceased Egidio, and heirs of
               two sixths of the succession of said Mr Pietro, whose tutelage and guard-
               ianship of said Ilario and the inventory (of the possessions) conferred by
               him are recorded in two public deeds written by hand by notary Antonio
               Bono on 7  September 1384.

                  Knowing of and acknowledging these receivables, Eliana, daughter of
               the deceased Bartolomeo dè Fieschi and wife of the deceased Lazzarotto
               Marocello lent 400 Genoese liras to said Mr Pietro, in his last wills the de-
               ceased Mr Pietro acknowledged these 400 Genoese liras as owing as dow-
               ries… and loans… to more than one person. Because of this, fully aware
               and informed by said Eliana, appearing as the promisee only, that the
               aforementioned things were true, personally promised and made available
               to Eliana, appearing as the promisee, to give Eliana or a person undoubt-
               edly appointed by her, these 400 Genoese liras (…) to be paid within the
               next 18 months. Under penalty that if what has been agreed is not observed
