382 from Italy to the Canary Islands
Remains of ancient buildings from the time of Lanzarotto Malocello. (Lanzarote).
there was a “Puesto” on Guanapay mountain near Teguise, which at that
time was Lanzarote’s capital city and military command centre, with the
task of responding to any outside attack.
“Le Canarien” cites also that, in retaliation for an attack by rebel chief-
tain Afche on some Normans, they kidnapped and beheaded a native wom-
an, putting her head stuck on a spear on top of a nearby mountain; this
implies that the castle was located away from the sea and toward the centre
of the island, since the most important aboriginal villages were all visible
from Guanapay mountain.
More recently, in 1984, Antonio Romero Mora and Agustín Pallarés
Lasso found the ruins of a building on top of Guanapay, and exactly twenty
years later (August 2004), pieces of pottery and dishes of both Aboriginal
and European type were found in “the tower” plateau; this would confirm
the existence of the castle of Lanzarotto on that site.
