“PEACE for Galilee” – Naval Operations

           Ze’ev Almog

n June 5, 1982, the Israeli Navy has launched, in collaboration with other branch-
O es of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), operation “PEACE for Galilee”. The oper-
ation was set out in order to stop unprovoked terrorist attacks from Lebanon on civilian
           population in northern Israel.
The IDF’s goal was to destroy the terrorists’ infrastructure in Lebanon in order to
           eradicate future terrorist activities.
The tasks of the Navy were to support the ground forces and to prevent interference
of the IDF operation by the Syrian Navy.
The specific missions of the Israeli Navy were as follows:
                                th
           a) To land the 96 Operational Area

              sion and to transfer
              their armored vehi-
              cles, equipment and
              troops onto the coast-
              al shores of Lebanon.

              troops along the coast
              of Lebanon with ac-
              curate fire while tar-
              geting enemy objects
              on ground.
           c) To impose a sea
              blockade on all Leb-
              anese ports in order
              to prevent the trans-
              fer of terrorist troops
              and weapons through
              the sea.
              The idea and execu-
           tion of landing forces
           from the sea was based
           on accumulated experi-
           ence in amphibious op-
           erations in prior years:
