“PEACE for Galilee” – Naval Operations

n June 5, 1982, the Israeli Navy has launched, in collaboration with other branch-
O es of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), operation “PEACE for Galilee”. The oper-
ation was set out in order to stop unprovoked terrorist attacks from Lebanon on civilian
population in northern Israel.
The IDF’s goal was to destroy the terrorists’ infrastructure in Lebanon in order to
eradicate future terrorist activities.
The tasks of the Navy were to support the ground forces and to prevent interference
of the IDF operation by the Syrian Navy.
The specific missions of the Israeli Navy were as follows:

a) To land the 96 Operational Area
Paratrooper Divi-
sion and to transfer
their armored vehi-
cles, equipment and
troops onto the coast-
al shores of Lebanon.
b) To support advancing
troops along the coast
of Lebanon with ac-
curate fire while tar-
geting enemy objects
on ground.
c) To impose a sea
blockade on all Leb-
anese ports in order
to prevent the trans-
fer of terrorist troops
and weapons through
the sea.
The idea and execu-
tion of landing forces
from the sea was based
on accumulated experi-
ence in amphibious op-
erations in prior years:
