Operation “Raviv” (September 1969)
During the War of Attrition, on Septem-
ber 8, 1969, a relative small landing opera-
tion took place in the Gulf of Suez by only
three 36-meter-landing crafts, executed in
one short cycle.
Between 1972 – 1973 several landing
operations were planned and trained for in
the South-western shore of the Suez Gulf
(operation “Green Light”). Even though the
operation did not take place eventually, the
Navy has gained valuable experience in the
area of integrated sea and land operation,
command and control procedures, division
and delegation of power to the different
field commanders, the safeguarding of the
theater of action, the planning of maritime
routes and the methods of capturing and se-
curing beachheads.
Since the beginning of 1979 and until
1982, all amphibious forces and their auxiliary components were evacuated from the
Sinai Peninsula - in accordance with the peace agreement with Egypt. They were con-
centrated in the Mediter-
ranean southern base of
Ashdod, which is situated
close to relevant ground
forces. All the naval units
were put under one com-
mand, the commander of
this base; who trained all
members of the amphibi-
ous forces and was later
assigned to commanding
the whole operation from
the board of a missile
boat.
