The Naval Prticipants in the Operation
Peace for Galilee
Between 1979 – 1982, while
executing various organizational,
instructional and command moves
towards a possible amphibious
operation, a series of operative
activities have taken place along
the shores of Lebanon. As a side
effect, such activities contributed
to the elimination of terrorist at-
tempts to penetrate Israel from the
sea.
Considering this experience, it
is not surprising that the naval op-
eration of “Peace for Galilee” was
very successful and ended without
a single casualty or damage to ves-
sels.
The Israeli naval forces were
comprised of 22 missile boats -
providing support fire to ground forces, plus isolating and securing the area of operation
from possible Syrian intervention.
2 submarines for detecting enemy targets on shore and for directing the missile boats’
fire against such targets. This is in addition to giving early warning against sea bound
enemy forces. Directing Missileboats’ Fire
15 fast patrol boats for direct
support to the landing troops.
3 landing crafts which could
land 41 – 49 armored vehicles
and 604 troops.
An auxiliary ship that carried
50 Naval Commando troops to
capture the beachhead.
34 zodiac boats that were dedi-
cated to delivering the paratroop-
ers to shore.
2 tugboats for vessel salvage op-
eration.
