                                                                          introduction
                                                      General introduction

he volume that the reader can browse through in these pages represents the joint work of the Arma dei
Carabinieri General Command’s Historical Office and the Carabinieri Historical Museum, together with
T many institutional partners and collaborators. This volume intends to bring to the attention of the public,
a horizontal and multidisciplinary effort to make better known the role, the events and the lives of some of those
Carabinieri who, since the period of neutrality, have operated in the interest of our country. The exhibition also
helps in understanding the transverse nature of the role of the Arma dei Carabinieri in society, which was very
well evidenced by the documents and materials exhibited in the Arma dei Carabinieri Historical Museum’s hall
of honour between December 2017 and March 2018. Those materials were supplemented by other initiatives,
open to the public and of an informative character (presentation of volumes, round table discussions, literary sa-
lons, conferences all held in the theatre at
the Museum: a special initiative curated by
the Museum staff). At the end of the exhi-
bition in Rome, the panels used for the ex-
hibition formed the backbone of the trave-
ling exhibition that moved throughout Ita-
ly; moreover, it was complemented by ma-
terials from individual collectors and asso-
ciations and from what had previously been
collected in the Arma dei Carabinieri ar-
chives. This volume intends to enclose what
has been done to remember the multifacet-
ed, complex and implicit value of those Ca-
rabinieri who, from neutrality until the im-
mediate post-war period, were engaged in
                the service of the country.
