                                       The months before the conflict

few months before Italy entered the war, the Carabinieri was already engaged in curbing demonstrations
for and against that intervention in squares throughout Italy, which reached their peak in May 1915. Dur-
A ing the “radiose giornate di maggio”, there were clashes between the two factions in Turin and Milan. In
Rome, interventionists, urged by Gabriele D’Annunzio, assaulted the Parliament, where the parliamentary ma-
jority led by Giolitti claimed neutrality, as well as the house of the statesman, which was defended by a Cara-
binieri platoon. The commands along the border started gathering information on the movements of the Aus-
tro-Hungarian army. The Carabinieri represented one of the pivots of the large mobilization launched by Gen-
eral Luigi Cadorna. It started in March 1915 with the recall of the latest classes of compulsory military service
(starting from 1894 class). During the conflict, the territorial Carabinieri units were engaged in the difficult call
to arms of about 5 million men.
