Chasteller. The trust in the Austrian staff officer still lived even in 1805. It was a great
loss for the allies when the able general Schmidt Kutozov’s Austrian chief of staff was
killed at the battle of Krems. His successor, Weyrother was infamous for his catastrophic
battle plan for Austerlitz.
Alliances and coalitions were always formed and dissolved according to Raison
d’être, but a rather long and victorious military cooperation– just like long animos-
ity – left his marks. The famous Tauroggen-convention concluded by Diebitsch and
Yorck on December 30 1812 founded the tradition of the German-Russian comradeship.
The “spirit of Tauroggen” was revived during the Weimar-Period and according some
sources it was still alive at the highest ranks of the Wehrmacht during the Second World
War. The final word on choosing the friend or enemy is nevertheless always reserved
for the politics.
Of course many questions concerning the military cooperation in this period re-
mained open. They will be discussed in the written form of my lecture.
